What is the sound of silence?

If this tranquility here is whispering (austere)

Is this I hear what they call silence;

The distant chip of birds,

The whirl of the firs,

The seeping nothingness resounding in my ears,

The drone of insects busy foraging for morning branche’

For they say this place is silent.

What really is the sound of silence?

The far overtone of city life (as a ricocheting stillness…)

Or the soft lap of water by the riverside

What really is silence

Or is it really it

But the space without…
